Most of the programs are designed to help people with short term assistance, while there some that will help for a longer term.
While you have to pay back loans, you do not have to pay back grants. If you receive them they are considered to be a gift to help you get back on your feet. They never have to be paid back, so it makes it easier to focus on improving your financial situation. Most grant programs have qualifications you will need to meet in order to be approved. Be sure to review the qualifications closely and apply for all those you feel you meet. There is no limit to the number of grants you can apply for or receive at one time.
Grants for Felons in New Hampshire
Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – Housing expenses are typically the most difficult bill that people need to pay. Felons who need help paying for their rent may qualify for help through HUD. The federally funded program offers several ways they help people, including paying for rent, helping them avoid foreclosure, providing weatherization services, and helping people to become homeowners. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – Formerly known as the food stamp program, those who need help obtaining food may qualify for SNAP. If approved, you will receive a debit card where funds will electronically be added each month. The card can then be used to pay for food items at the grocery store or farmers market. In New Hampshire, you can get half off the price of your produce at many stores when you pay with your SNAP benefit card. To qualify for SNAP, you have to have a low income and be a citizen or legal alien. The amount of your monthly benefit is determined by the number of people in your household. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – This program is federally funded and provides cash grants to those who are in need. The cash can be used to pay for living expenses, including rent, clothing, transportation, food, and bills. There is a lifetime limit of how long you can receive a TANF grant, which is 60 months. Emergency Assistance – New Hampshire offers an emergency assistance program for families who need financial help. The program will help people who need a rent deposit, utility deposits, first month’s rent, heating bill payment, and more. There is a limited amount of money in this fund each year and when it is gone then there are no more grants available until the next year. Medicaid – Felons who need help paying for medical treatment and bills may qualify for assistance through the federally funded Medicaid program. The program will pay for doctor visits, hospital stays, dental work, prescription drugs, vision care, substance abuse treatment, and more. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – Felons who need help paying for utility bills may be able to get a grant through LIHEAP. The program will pay for one utility bill per year. You have to re-apply each year that you need the assistance. The average grant that is given to pay for heating bills is $889. To qualify, you have to meet the low income requirements. In addition to the above grants for felons in New Hampshire, be sure to check with your local churches. Many of them offer assistance programs that will help with food, clothing, transportation vouchers, and more. They also usually do not have strict qualification requirements in order to receive the help.
