SBA Loans for Ex-Felons

Have a question? Email us here anything that troubles you.

Having a small business of your own can be challenging, but it can also be really rewarding. As a small business owner you will probably be able to make more money than working for someone else, but there may be times when you question what you are doing. Many small businesses need a loan at one time or another, regardless of what it will be used for. The good news is that there are Small Business Administration (SBA) loans for ex-felons.

The SBA is a federal agency that is dedicated to the needs of small businesses in the country. The whole mission of the SBA is to provide support, information, and loans to small businesses on a regular basis. Most small businesses will get something from the SBA, whether it is a loan, guidance, etc. The good news is that the SBA will give small business loans to ex-felons, just as they do those who have not been convicted of a felony.

What SBA Loans Are For     ::::  As mentioned, the SBA will give ex-felons loans. The loans that are provided through the SBA are used for small businesses purposes. There are some common things that the funds are used on, which include using the money as working capital, purchasing equipment, or buying a commercial space.

In other words, SBA loans are typically used to help with your businesses daily operations, which may include paying employees, rent, purchasing supplies, advertising, etc. The loans can also be used to purchase new equipment that you have wanted to get in order to grow your business. Another popular option when it comes to SBA loans it that the funds are used to purchase commercial property.

As a small business owner, you may have a lot of overhead if you are paying to rent a commercial space. That overhead could make it difficult for you to do well in business and grow, because it is taking up so much of what you make. Plus, it is not a good deal, because you are not purchasing the property. The person who owns it will be making the real profit from it.

Starting a Business with an SBA Loan

While it is true that many small businesses take out SBA loans to help grow their business or manage their daily expenses to keep their business going, there are other reasons to consider a SBA loan. If you are an ex-felon who is considering starting a business, then it is a good idea to consider a SBA loan. This is true if you feel you do not have the capital to start the business, and do not want to give up on the idea of having a business of your own.

The SBA also provides small business loans to those who would like to have a business but have not yet started. All you need is a good idea for a business, and then you can put together a business plan, and seek a SBA loan to get the funding to start it. If you do not know how to write up a business plan do not worry about that. You can still apply for a business loan through the SBA. You will still need to be able to complete the paperwork and provide detailed information about what your business idea is and how you see it going once you get the loan.

The SBA evaluates the loan applications and determines who is eligible to receive loans. If you are approved for a loan they will contact you to move forward with the next steps. Once you have the funds, you can do what you need to with them to support your small business, and then you will be paying it back monthly, with interest.

In reality, it is not the SBA that is providing you with the loan if you get one. They are only guaranteeing the loan to whomever it is that will be lending you the money. To explain, a bank will be providing you the funds for the loan, but the SBA is telling the bank that if you default on the loan that they will cover the majority of it to ensure that the bank gets its money back. They are giving your credit a boost with the bank, so that you are able to get the loan.

Making it Easier

In 2023, the SBA announced that they were going to make it even easier to give out loans. They are expanding their backing to try and include more people who are able to obtain loans. This is especially true if you come from a background that is seen as being minority or underprivileged. Women are also going to have access to more SBA loans going forward.

This is good news that the government issued, because it is small businesses that are the backbone of the country. Each year, there is billions of dollars loaned out around the country in the form of SBA loans. If you go to a small bank you have a 50% chance of getting the loan approved, and if you go to a larger bank you have a 25% chance of it being approved. Now that they have made additional changes to expand their reach, those numbers will begin to increase.

Ex-felons who would like to get a SBA loan need to apply with the bank and let them know they are seeking SBA funding. Being an ex-felon is not likely to keep someone from being able to get a SBA loan. As long as you have served your time and are with good legal standing when you apply for the loan it should not impact you. If your credit score is low, due to being an ex-felon, work on bringing that up, so that you have an easier time being approved for a SBA loan. Once you get the loan, you will be able to start, grow, and support your small business, and pay the loan back over time.
