  • First Hands Medical Expense Grants are for parents who have medical expenses due to their children. The medical grants are for those who live in the United States only. The organization does work with some international providers, however, if you live out of the country and need financial assistance.
  • You can complete your application online for a medical expense grant. They provide everything you need online. If you prefer to mail your application in you can also do that. Just download the application from the website, complete it, and then send it by mail to the First Hands organization, which is located in North Kansas, Missouri. It can also be faxed, if you find that route more convenient. They are available by email to answer questions.
  • The medical expenses you are seeking assistance to pay for must be for a child that is 18 years or younger. They also need to be under the care of a pediatrician.
  • When you submit your grant application it has to be to cover something specific, so you will need to know exactly what type of medical expense you will be paying for if you receive the funds.
  • You cannot receive the grant if you have health insurance that will pay for the coverage. The grant is to help those who cannot get health insurance to pay for the costs.
  • You can only apply for this grant one time per year. If you are awarded the grant, you can only be awarded it three times within the child’s lifetime.
  • There is an income limit to be considered for this medical expense grant. Felons who apply will need to be within the income limits. For example, felons with a two dependent children cannot exceed a yearly income of $55,000.
  • Some of the expenses that can be covered with the grant include treatment and equipment. The organization does give medical expense grants to help cover the costs associated with travel and lodging, as well as making vehicle modifications.
  • Any grant you are awarded must be used within 12 months of it being issued.

Additional Grant Application Information for Felons

There are some medical expenses that are not covered with this program. These include home modifications, vehicle purchases, past medical bill payment assistance, co-pays and deductibles, and therapy dogs. Keep this in mind when you are completing your grant application. It’s important to apply for help covering on those expenses for which the program will pay for.

Once your grant application is received by the organization it will go through a review process. A case manager will follow up with you regarding your application, and ask for any additional information that is needed. If your grant is approved you will receive the funds to meet your medical expense need.
