$500 Cystic Fibrosis Recreation Grant

Have a question? Email us here anything that troubles you.

Felons who have cystic fibrosis, or who have a family member with the condition, may be able to qualify for a $500 Cystic Fibrosis Recreation Grant. The grant is given out to numerous people each year by the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation. The mission of the grant is to get those with the disease to engage in recreational activity and to help support them doing so.

The Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation is an organization that focuses on getting people with the health conditions to participate in recreational activities. They promote recreational activity as a way to be healthy. The organization was founded in 2003. Each year, they give out recreational grants, and felons with cystic fibrosis are eligible to get them. The organization aims to give out $10,000 per month in recreational grants. Their goal is to one day be able to give grants to every person who applies for one.

About the Cystic Fibrosis Recreational Grant

There are two grant cycles per year. Ideally, felons should apply for the grant during one or both of those recreational grant cycles. They offer one during the first half of the year, and then another for the second half of the year. They are not able to approve all recreational grant applications they receive, so it’s a good idea for felons to get their grant in early and re-apply if it doesn’t get selected the first time around.

Here are some additional things to know about the Cystic Fibrosis Recreational Grant that felons can apply for:

  • The recreational grant request can be up to $500 in most cases. They do allow for a grant request for up to $1,000 if it qualifies for peer support.
  • Only completed grant applications will be considered, so be sure to completely fill out everything and submit all documentation. All questions need to be answered and you have to submit a photo. Only submit the grant application once you have everything together.
  • You will need to provide financial information for your household, and you can only submit one application per cycle.
  • The application needs to be completed by the person who would like the grant. If you have difficulty writing it out, someone can write it for you, but all of the information and details must come from you.
  • The application deadlines for each cycle are March 31 and September 30. The applications must be submitted by midnight on the day of the deadline.
  • The funds being requested must go to support recreational activities. There is a lot of leeway when it comes to what activities you can get a grant for, but some that are included are classes for surfing, yoga, rock climbing, swimming, fitness, and more. They will also provide recreational grants for gym memberships.

How to Apply

Felons interested in applying for this grant should get a letter of recommendation. The letter should be submitted along with the grant application. The letter of recommendation can come from a doctor, nurse, social worker, etc. You just need someone who is familiar with you to write up a short letter stating why they think you would be a good candidate to receive the recreation grant.

Once you have all of your information together then it’s time to submit it all to the Cystic Fibrosis Lifestyle Foundation. Don’t submit the application in pieces or it will not be considered. Nothing can be missing from your application packet when you finally submit for consideration. You can download the application at their website, fill it out, provide the additional supplemental information, and then submit all when you are ready.

If you receive a recreation grant you cannot be awarded another one within the same year. Every person who receives one can only be awarded one each year. If you receive a recreational grant, you can use the funds to pay for the classes, as well as purchase equipment for the activity. They do not reimburse for past recreational activities. This grant is only for activity that you will engage in going forward.

Cystic fibrosis may make many felons abstain from getting involved in recreational activities, but it shouldn’t. That’s the reason this organization started giving out grants. Being involved in recreational activities is a good way to improve your mental and physical health, as well as your overall quality of life.

If you have a recreational sport you are interested in and would like funding to help you get started or sustain it, consider applying for this grant. Recreational grants are great for ensuring that felons have access to being able to engage in sports, take fun classes, and be active. Whether you want to train and run a marathon or you want to join a baseball team, this recreational grant can help make it happen.
