New Mexico has programs that felons can turn to during difficult financial times. The programs will help people pay their rent, obtain food, and have all of their basic needs met. The programs are largely funded by the federal government, but there are also some that are funded through the state and local government. The grant programs are a great way for people to get the help they need, while they are trying to better their situation.

Unlike loans, grants never have to be paid back. If you receive a grant it is essentially considered to be a gift to help you during times of need. Grants for Felons in New Mexico

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – Those who need cash assistance may qualify for a grant through the TANF program. If approved, you will receive a monthly cash grant that can be used on a wide variety of living expenses. The cash can be used on food, rent, transportation, and paying bills. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) – Felons who need help obtaining food may be able to get a SNAP grant. Those who are approved for the program, which is formerly known as food stamps, will receive a monthly grant that they can use to purchase food. If approved, you will receive a debit card, where the funds will be added to each month. The card can then be used at the grocery store or farmers market to pay for food items. Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) – This program is designed to help people who have a low income be able to pay their heating and cooling bills. The program is federally funded, and will pay for one utility bill per year. You will need to re-apply each year that you need the assistance. The grant is paid directly to the energy provider on your behalf. To qualify, you have to be a legal citizen, show proof income for the last 30 days, and provide proof of your heating/cooling costs for the last month. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) – The HUD program is federally funded and has a mission of helping people with a low income with their housing needs. The program will help you find affordable housing, pay rent, avoid foreclosure, become a homebuyer, and receive weatherization services. They also have a Section 8 program, where they own low income housing units where people can live. To qualify, you have to have a low income and be a legal citizen of the country. Medicaid – The Medicaid program is federally funded and focuses on providing people with assistance with meeting their healthcare needs. Those who are approved will be able to get free healthcare, including doctor visits, hospital stays, dental work, prescription drugs, substance abuse treatment, and more. Lifeline – Felons who need help paying for a phone bill may qualify for help through the Lifeline program. The program, which is federally funded, will provide those who have a low income with a free phone. The phone comes with texting, voice, and data. Catholic Charities – This organization has locations throughout the state. They provide assistance to those in need, including helping with food, clothing, and shelter. The programs may help with food, shelter, clothing, transportation vouchers, and more. They also do not usually have strict qualification requirements.
