Scholarships play an important role in helping felons be able to pay for college. Similar to college grants, scholarships do not have to be paid back. They are sums of money that are awarded to felons that will be used to pay for going to college. There are free scholarships for felons offered around the country.

Felons who would like to obtain scholarship funds to help pay for college should apply for as many of them that they feel they are qualified for. There is no limit to the number of scholarships that you can receive at one time. The more free scholarships you are able to obtain the less you will pay for your college tuition out of pocket.

Contact their financial aid department and let them know you would like to attend college there, but you need help paying for the tuition. They should be able to point you in the direction of resources that will help you pay for tuition to attend their institution.

The college you would like to attend should be able to give you information on applying for a range of grants to help pay for college. They should also know about free scholarships for felons that are being offered by local businesses and organizations. Many businesses and organizations will provide free scholarships to help pay for colleges, but they keep the funds within their local community. The colleges will know about which places are offering them, so you can apply to try and get them.

Free Scholarships for Felons

Osher Foundation Reentry Scholarships – These are free college scholarships for felons that will help to improve lives through education. They provide free college scholarships for felons who are ages 25-50 and have been out of schooling for at least five years. This means that if you have never attended college, and are at least 25, or you have not been attending college for at least 5 years, then you may qualify for the scholarship. The application to attend the spring semester is December 15. The reward that is given out with the Osher Foundation Reentry Scholarship is $5,000. The Prisoner Reentry Institute – This organization offers free scholarships for felons to help pay for college tuition. The reentry scholarships are available as free money, so they do not have to be paid back. Creative Corrections Education Foundation – This organization offers scholarships to help pay for college tuition. It’s a non-profit organization located in Texas, but you don’t have to live in that state to get the scholarships. The funds they give out to people are provided by a partnership with federal, state, and city corrections departments. So far, they have given out nearly $200,000 worth of college scholarships to hundreds of students who are attending college. Prison Scholar Fund – This organization offers college scholarships for felons. Their mission is to give felons a second chance at life and have a way to be able to transform their lives. Obtaining a college education can be a life changing experience for anyone, but especially for felons. It provides them with a second chance at life. Plus, a college education opens doors so that people can have more opportunities and find better jobs. Most felons with a college education also earn more than their counterparts.

In addition to the free scholarships for felons listed above, be sure to reach out to any local reentry programs, churches, and non-profit organizations in your area. They often provide grants and scholarships to help people improve their lives, so you may be able to get some assistance from them. Local programs are often not announced online, but by contacting them in person or on a local level you can get the information. They may also be able to provide you with some referrals to help you find additional resources.
